Tips for Professionals
For those of us in the helping professions, to truly support those we guide to reconnect with their full Self, we must do our own deep work within ourselves. Our personal insights allow us to see the gaps of insight within our clients. Whether you are a doctor, nurse practitioner, medical assistant, teacher, professor, therapist, counselor, social worker, mentor, coach, parent or other type of personal guide, we specialize in supporting you as a professional to take your practice/teaching to a deeper level. Here are some tips to keep in mind when working with those you support to deepen their experience.
Tips for therapists, counselors, guides, mentors and coaches
Tip #1: To assess your client’s ability and willingness to go deeper within themselves, begin with the Cognitive Behavioral approach.
Ask your clients to tell you all about their resistance. Support their resistance. (Reverse psychology works here because now your clients don’t have to convince you how they need their resistance.) Explain how resistance is an important role for their Basic Ego. Ask them if they want to learn how to manage their life from their inner wisdom (which is their Actualizing Ego) instead of the chaotic management of their Basic Ego.
Ask your clients if they feel emotionally strong enough to go deeper into their issues. Assess how emotionally resilient they are. Do they punish themselves? Do they blame themselves or others in a way that is cyclical and does not move them through their emotions? Do they feel shame to talk about it? What stops them from giving themselves Love and Compassion for their past traumas.
Teach your clients that there are many parts to themselves and it is good to hear all the inner voices such as the two year old, the rebellious teenager, the artist, their fear, their depression, their addictions etc. Each part can talk to their inner wisdom which strengthens their ability and resilience to manage from their Actualizing Ego.
If your clients seem unable to access their inner wisdom have them imagine if a wise guru or compassionate parent were listening to the inner dialogue what would they say?
Tip #2: Teach your clients how to increase their self-compassion to ready them for future deeper emotional work.
If your clients are not able to give themselves compassion, have them visualize an animal or child in need of compassion. Remind them that this compassion is inside of them.
If your client can give compassion to an innocent child or animal remind them that they can give themselves this same compassion.
Continue boosting their compassion until they are ready to go deeper emotionally. You are helping them build their own inner “parent of their dreams.” See the Actualizing Ego for more details.
Tip #3: When your clients are ready, have them pick an incident (usually in childhood) that caused them emotional trauma. This can be any kind of abuse or neglect.
Usually with eyes closed have your clients visualize a calm and beautiful scene from nature. When they are ready have the traumatic event begin to appear from a distance so as to allow them time to accept it. Have them hug a pillow or stuffed animal if they will do this. If not, have them imagine hugging their hurt child. If they have trouble with this exercise have them place their hands on their body part that is hurting (usually the heart area). Then have them breathe deeply to relax before ending session.
Have your clients do voice dialogue between their hurt child and their “parent of their dreams” until their inner child feels heard and supported.
Tip 4: If your clients will engage in any kind of voice dialogue with their anger towards their abuser (doesn’t have to be horrible abuse to feel victimized), have them move the anger out of themselves by telling their abuser how it made them feel, how harmful it was, how it destroyed their innocence, self-confidence, etc.
Tip 5: Always, always, always, end sessions with the “parent of their dreams” and self-compassion. This insures that your clients don’t go out the door feeling down.
Tip 6: Give your clients a homework assignment to write about their traumatic incident as it “should have happened” if they had experienced the support of their self-compassionate “parent of their dreams.”
For educators, doctors, and medical professionals
Tip #1: Ask your student/patient how they are feeling as part of your work with them. Teach them that their emotions need to be felt with self-compassion.
Tip #2: Remember emotions play a huge part in your students/patients physical recovery and healing, which influences their learning and ability to effectively live their lives.
Tip #3: For educators - Your pupils will act out your inner emotional state. If you are peaceful, they will feel this and this will help them calm themselves. Good class management starts with your own self-management style. Are you authoritarian? Or are you accepting of rebellion, while being fair in your consequences?
